Pervasive CSCW for smart spaces communities

    Get PDF
Future pervasive environments will take into consideration not only individual users' interest, but also social relationships. In today's scenarios, the trend is to make use of collective intelligence, where the interpretation of context information can be harnessed as input for pervasive systems. Therefore, social CSCW applications represent new challenges and possibilities in terms of use of group context information for adaptability and personalization in pervasive computing. The objective of this paper is to present two enterprise scenarios that support collaboration and adaption capabilities through pervasive communities combined with social computing. Collaborative applications integrated with pervasive communities can increase the activity's quality of the end user in a wide variety of tasks

Locally adapted populations of a copepod can evolve different gene expression patterns under the same environmental pressures

As populations diverge in allopatry, but under similar thermal conditions, do similar thermal performance phenotypes evolve by maintaining similar gene expression patterns, or does genetic divergence lead to divergent patterns of gene expression between these populations? We used genetically divergent populations of the copepod Tigriopus californicus , whose performance at different thermal conditions is well characterized, to investigate transcriptome-wide expression responses under two different thermal regimes: (1) a nonvariable temperature regime and (2) a regime with variable temperature. Our results show the expression profiles of the response to these regimes differed substantially among populations, even for populations that are geographically close. This pattern was accentuated when populations were raised in the variable temperature environment. Less heat-tolerant populations mounted strong but divergent responses to the different thermal regimes, with a large heat-shock response observed in one population, and an apparent reduction in the expression of genes involved in basic cellular processes in the other. Our results suggest that as populations diverge in allopatry, they may evolve starkly different responses to changes in temperature, at the gene expression level, while maintaining similar thermal performance phenotypes

Future pervasive environments will take into consideration physical and digital social relationships. Nowadays it is important to use collective intelligence, where the interpretation of context information can be harnessed as input for context-aware applications, especially for group collaboration. For collaborative applications this represents opportunities, but also new challenges in terms of using collective information for adaptability and personalization in pervasive environments. This paper presents the challenges in design and development of a context-aware framework CSCW supporting pro-behaviour capabilities in pervasive communities

Stability and decay of Bloch oscillations in presence of time-dependent nonlinearity

    Get PDF
We consider Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates in presence of a time-modulated s-wave scattering length. Generically, interaction leads to dephasing and decay of the wave packet. Based on a cyclic-time argument, we find---additionally to the linear Bloch oscillation and a rigid soliton solution---an infinite family of modulations that lead to a periodic time evolution of the wave packet. In order to quantitatively describe the dynamics of Bloch oscillations in presence of time-modulated interactions, we employ two complementary methods: collective-coordinates and the linear stability analysis of an extended wave packet. We provide instructive examples and address the question of robustness against external perturbations.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures. Slightly amended final versio

Back to the Future! The Evolving Role of Maintenance Therapy after Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

    Get PDF
AbstractRelapse is a devastating event for patients with hematologic cancers treated with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In most situations, relapse treatment options are limited. Maintenance therapy offers the possibility of delaying or avoiding disease recurrence, but its role remains unclear in most conditions that we treat with transplantation. Here, Dr. Hourigan presents an overview of minimal residual disease (MRD) measurement in hematologic malignancies and the applicability of MRD-based post-transplantation interventions. Dr. McCarthy reviews current knowledge of maintenance therapy in the autologous transplantation context, with emphasis on immunologic interventions and immune modulation strategies designed to prevent relapse. Dr. de Lima discusses current lines of investigation in disease recurrence prevention after allogeneic transplantation, focusing on acute myeloid leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome

A context-aware framework for collaborative activities in pervasive communities

Pervasive environments involve the interaction of users with the objects that surround them and also other participants. In this way, pervasive communities can lead the user to participate beyond traditional pervasive spaces, enabling the cooperation among groups taking into account not only individual interests, but also the collective and social context. In this study, the authors explore the potential of using context-aware information in CSCW application in order to support collaboration in pervasive environments. In particular this paper describes the approach used in the design and development of a context-aware framework utilizing users' context information interpretation for behaviour adaptation of collaborative applications in pervasive communities

Effects of Staling of Bread Crumb on Mechanical Properties and Cell Morphology

    Get PDF
This project analyzed the changes in properties of bread as it experiences staling. The basic cell structure based on open-closed cell ratios, relative density and cell wall lengths was determined. The cell morphology was observed over the course of four weeks to determine any changes in dimensions and geometry. Tensile tests were performed on staling bread to analyze any changes in the mechanical properties. There are apparent correlations with staling on cell dimensions and mechanical properties
